Another way I created more deskspace is by using a vertical dock for my Macbook Pro. I chose this one from Twelve South to keep my desktop looking minimal and clean.

I've been told that running your laptop in clamshell mode like this, reduces airflow. I have noticed the fan working a little harder than normal when running heavy tasks like rendering. While I haven't notied a performance dip, I just thought I'd share my experience.
