The title says "bad news" but I think it's somewhat good news for those who have AirPods. Having a charging case is very convenient. I'm not sure why they would release the new case before the upgraded product, but I think this will make using AirPods more appealing.

I like the idea of a charging case for the AirPods. It makes more sense to use them if you have a way to charge them easily and reliably.
