Since the Pixel's sales have been so disappointing, I think it's a smart move to focus on promoting the cheaper alternative. While it may seem risky to take a step back from pushing the "premium" device, it won't do them any good if no one purchases it. Consumers will always appreciate a decent mid-range model that they didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for.

Maybe, but let's not forget the multitude of other companies that have had issues with a flagship phone on launch. They seem to recover quickly from the loss and I'm sure Google's pockets are deep enough to allow them to as well.

I agree that other companies have also had issues with flagship phones and so this shouldn't necessarily spell trouble for the Pixel 3a. In the long run, would lowering the cost be cheaper than launching less-powerful and cheaper options?

One cool thing that sets Google apart as a phone maker is its Daydream-ready phones with VR capabilities. I don't think the company pushes that enough when it might help win over more new buyers.
