I suppose this ambitious project is starting to fall behind. The price doesn't really justify the lack of worthy improvements over the other versions. I believe XS and XR will do much better in 2019.

At times, an ambitious project doesn't quickly translate to high sales and this is exactly the case with the XS and XR. This year hasn't been the best for most smartphone companies and most of them will be looking forward to a brighter 2019.

Apple isn't innovative enough to command such high prices anymore. All the major phone companies seem to offer consumers the same things. Personally, I don't particularly care whether a phone has a bezel, but I do want a headphone jack.

I have a similar reaction as you do. The bezel-free phone isn't that innovative as other phones can be like that. I suppose the innovation will come from app makers who will make use of the upgraded power, space, and speed of the new phones.

I wouldn't call it 'not being innovative enough' because Apple seems to still be leading in terms of sales. Could it be that the other phone companies have sort of improved the quality of their technology?

I'm quite surprised that people aren't embracing them as enthusiastically as they did in the past. Apple usually has dedicated fans. Even their $1,000 iPhone X once sold well.
