$799 is not an easy money to get, maybe for some. Still, Apple has made a good strategy to follow the demands of the people. XS has a higher price tag so it will be easier for people to choose the cheaper one, which is the XR.

I guess what JamieX means is the screen-size of these smartphones. The iPhone XS and XR have screen sizes of 5.8 and 6.1 inches respectively. As you rightly put it, it is all a matter of preference.
