I don't think it destroyed handheld gaming. It might be that the DS was created during the transition period of handheld gaming devices being into mobile gaming as smartphones become more powerful to process games.

I agree with you. The development of DS is at the wrong time because games in DS or similar games can be played in evolving cellphones.

The entry of the PlayStation 2 into the market was probably the latest indication that handheld gaming would slowly fade away. Everyone enjoyed it while it lasted and granted, it was the in-thing then!
