I don't recall the last time I saw an optical drive in any PC. It makes sense for modern laptops to drop the technology as they strive for smaller and thinner devices.

I kept wondering why most laptops lack an optical drive, and I agree that despite this technology being obsolete, the desire for more compact computers could have phased it out.

I have not used the optical drive for ages, and I don't even recall the last time I saw it on a laptop. Who still needs one with all the options available now? It's completely unnecessary, in my opinion.

I agree that the desire for more compact computers could have necessitated this. Why would I need an optical drive in this day and age? There are more file storage options now, plus plenty of streaming services available.

Who needs an optical drive in this day and age? It is no coincidence that modern laptops no longer have them. I would (separately) buy one to be able to play old multimedia or write to drives. Additionally, it allows simple driver installation... See more

The optical drive is no longer useful if the result is lighter and more convenient laptops. It had not hit me that modern devices no longer have them. It just highlights how (quickly) technology evolves.
