AudioQuest DragonFly Cobalt USB DAC
The DragonFly Cobalt USB DAC is part of AudioQuest’s DragonFly line of budget portable DAC/headphone amps that have been well-regarded over the years, for instance, the DragonFly Red, offering boosted performance for your laptop or smartphone's digital library in a compact, USB-stick form.
Similar to the critically acclaimed DragonFly Red, Cobalt has the robust 2.1-volt output to drive virtually any headphone, uses a bit-perfect digital volume control for outstanding signal-to-noise ratio, enables seamless compatibility with Apple and Android devices, and also an MQA Renderer. Its file limit is still 24-bit/96kHz, too. It also utilizes Gordon Rankin's StreamLength asynchronous USB code and uses a single clock for both the DAC and microcontroller functions, possibly outperforms DACs that use multiple clocks.
More refinements added to the DragonFly Cobalt, unlike its other siblings. It includes a more advanced ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip with a minimum-phase slow roll-off filter for more natural sound. Its Microchip's superb PIC32MX274 microprocessor draws less current and increases processing speed by 33%. There is an enhancement to the power-supply filtering that particularly increases immunity to WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular noise.
The Dragonfly Cobalt also comes with a form-fitting DragonTail female USB-A to male USB-C Adaptor. All DragonTails use AQ's Carbon-level USB cable.
